Twenty-one special needs primary and secondary school teachers are undergoing a week-long paralympics coaching training at the Sports Council in Blantyre.

Apart from basic coaching skills, the teachers are also being drilled in how to handle the 17 visually-impaired athletes, who will participate in the Zone V1 Games in Zimbabwe in December.

Malawi Paralympics coach George Luhanga, who is facilitating the training alongside athletics lecturer Isaac Phiri, said: “The special needs teachers were drawn from strategically selected schools across the country. We want them to have basic coaching skills for them to help the Zimbabwe-bound athletes to be in good shape.

He said the 17 athletes, who were identified through various competitions last year, will go into first camp training at the Council next Sunday and they will be released for non-residential camp the following week.
