Temwa tops US scorers’ chart
US-based Malawian prolific striker Temwa Chawinga on Sunday scaled the summit of the scorers’ chart in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) for the first time after taking her tally to four goals.
The Scorchers forward scored a brace for Kansas City Current as they saw off Bay FC 5-2.
She is now the joint leading scorer alongside her teammate Beatriz Zaneratto Joao and Uchenna Kanu of Racing Louisville.
In a match monitored on NWSL TV, Temwa scored the third and fourth goals for the hosts, who won this encounter without breaking sweat.
The 25-year-old netted her first in the 56th minute with ease. She got a pass that oozed class then released a shot to the bottom right corner. No fuss.
Five minutes later, she struck again. Temwa run to a long ball from Vanessa DiBenardo and with Bay goalkeeper Lysiannee Proulx out of position, she coolly lobbed it past the helpless goaltender.
Current are top with 13 points from five matches, having dropped only two points so far when they drew one-all against reigning champions Gortham FC 1-1.
They are a point above second-placed Washingtone Spirit.
In an interview on Sunday, Temwa said she is enjoying her game.
“Everything is working to perfection. The team work is just amazing, we play for each other,” she said.
Meanwhile, it was a weekend of mixed fortunes for the Chawinga sisters as Tabitha’s French women’s top league side Paris Saint Germain (PSG) lost 3-2 away to Lyon in the first leg of the Uefa Women’s Champions League semi-finals on Saturday night.
It was the first time that Tabitha has not scored in more than 11 matches. But PSG still have a chance to turn the tables in the second leg.
