Temwa wins US golden boot again

US-based Malawi women’s football star Temwa Chawinga has become the second player to retain the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) golden boot after Australian Sam Kerr.

The Kansas City (KC) Current forward has won the top-scorer award with 15 goals in 23 matches following the conclusion of the regular season on Sunday.

She netted two goals more than her runner-up  Esther Gonzalez of Spain.

Temwa, who is the first and only African to have won the NWSL golden boot, first scooped the top-scorer award  in her debut season last year with a record 20 goals when she was also named the Most Valuable Player.

The 27-year-old Scorchers’ striker also spiced up her season with three assists.

Kerr, who now plays for Chelsea Women in the English women’s top-flight, won it in three consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2019.

Temwa could not be reached for comment yesterday, but National Women’s Football Association chairperson Adellaide Migogo said Temwa’s latest feat underlines her status as one of the best players in the world.

“It is not easy to win the golden boot twice in a row unless one is exceptionally good and Temwa has proved that,” she said.

“We are proud of her exploits as she continues to fly the country flag high. She is a genius.”

According to kansascity.com, a year after her record-breaking debut NWSL season, Temwa has continued to rewrite the history books, becoming the fastest player to notch 25 regular season goals.

In September, she became the first player in the league to score in seven consecutive regular season road matches.

Temwa was also named the NWSL Player-of-the-Month in March and May, bringing her career player-of-the-month accolades up to five for the most in league history.

She also earned five NWSL Best XI of the Month selections this year, and her 10 career monthly honours is now tied for second all-time.

Temwa also received the first Ballon d’Or nomination of her career this year and finished 17th in the final rankings.

She has also been nominated for the 2025 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Africa Women’s Footballer-of-the-Year Award.
