Ten years on screen

Growing up, Ruth Kulaisi never imagined she would become one of Malawi’s most-celebrated media personalities.

Her dream was to serve as a pastor, a passion that even led her to attend a Bible college.

Kulaisi: I am deeply grateful to God

But this year, Kulaisi is celebrating a decade of excellence as a TV and radio presenter as well as media strategist.

Her journey in the media has blossomed into a career that has inspired many.

Reflecting on this milestone, Kulaisi took to her social media to express gratitude to her supporters, writing: “I celebrate a decade in television and what a journey it’s been. From bringing your favourite celebrities into your home to sharing the stories that matter most.

“I’m deeply grateful to God, the giver of this gift, to Zodiak and to each one of you for being part of it. Your support has been the icing on this cake—thank you for every moment.”

Her success story is a powerful reminder that sometimes life leads us to paths we never envisioned.

Currently, she is a TV and radio presenter at Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS). Last year, she was named MBC Entertainer of the Year and Best Female TV Personality of the Year. She is also the 2024 WAN-Ifra women in news alumni, Winner of Misa Malawi Talk Show Host 2019 for women on ZBS and winner of Airtel Trace Music Star Season 2.

Kulaisi was also recognised as one of 100 influential women in Malawi and, also, received a Rising Star Award from Women With a Mission Recognition and Achievement Awards in 2022.

She studied at Globalheart Leadership College in Australia, where she majored in pastoral care.

“I never dreamt of being on TV, but it was prophesied over me in my early 20s. A career in media and television found me. I guess it was pre-destined,” she said.

Kulaisi’s journey in television began when she first appeared in a popular entertainment programme called ‘Fresh’ on Zodiak as a host, where she interviewed musicians and creative stars from across the globe.

Oprah Winfrey is one of her inspirers about whom she says: “I grew up watching Oprah on TV and her influence encouraged me to be free to speak, share, and empathise. It also shaped my inquisitive nature which comes alive in my interview style.”

In her time in media, television and communications, Kulaisi has interviewed international stars such as Kirk Franklin and Cassper Nyovest.

Her proudest moment is when she receives testimonials from viewers and guests on the impact of her interviews.

She is also happy when she meets young people who study journalism, especially those inspired by her work.

Kulaisi also recalls the time she interviewed Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Mr and Miss Albinism Sadc, when she hosted the CEO Africa Roundtable.

Another highlight was hosting an event for female presidents in Africa during a two-day Generation Equality Conference in Malawi.

This high level event included former president Joyce Banda and Africa’s first elected female president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

“I am humbled that my clients trust me with such key events and workshops, knowing I will deliver professionally. ” she said.

Reflecting on her career, Kulaisi said: “Not everyone can translate the same energy and professionalism from the camera to the stage, but I feel blessed to do that.

“Meeting Kirk Franklin felt like the perfect present for my 10th year in television.”

Despite her achievements, Kulaisi acknowledges challenges she has faced in her career.

“The greatest challenge was growing up in the public eye. I came into the industry at 24 and navigated marriage and motherhood in the spotlight. Some quarters within the industry were not supportive, questioning my progress in personal relationships,” she said.

She also highlighted broader challenges women in media face: “Women in media often deal with being underestimated or overly scrutinised. There’s also the struggle of balancing professionalism with societal expectations, and, at times, navigating unwanted advances.”

Her advice is to know who you are and what you bring to the table. “Set boundaries and stay professional”.

From hosting presidents and captains of industry to ordinary individuals, Kulaisi described herself as professional, diverse, adaptable and detail-oriented.

“My job can be demanding, but I have a strong support system in my family, for which I am forever grateful,” she said.

Looking ahead, she plans to have a greater impact in the media industry through knowledge sharing, coaching and providing communication strategies and moderation services across the continent and beyond.

“I’m excited for the next 10 years where I hope to continue serving organisations and individuals while contributing to impactful conversations,” said Kulaisi.

Commenting on Kulaisi’s journey, a creative in the industry, Dali Mizaya, described her as exceptional in her work.

He said: “Ruth is a role model, a hard worker and incredibly passionate about what she does. No wonder she has achieved so much.”

Mizaya further said Kulaisi’s unwavering dedication, resilience and innovative approach have not only set her apart, but have also inspired many in the industry.

“She doesn’t just work hard but works smart, constantly pushing boundaries and setting new standards,” he added.
