Political leaders on Sunday traded jokes, reflections and messages of unity at the CCAP Livingstonia Synod’s 40th Biennial Assembly with Second Vice-President Enock Chihana telling congregants that the “devil” lurks in politics.
Representing President Peter Mutharika at the gathering held at Kamuzu Academy in Kasungu, Chihana said the President sent him with a message of unity, arguing that Malawi’s political leaders are too closely connected to justify the hostility that often characterises political competition.

Facing former president Lazarus Chakwera, Chihana said he sees more than a former Head of State, saying that he sees an in-law who married in his home village.
Turning to UTM Party leader Dalitso Kabambe, the second veep recalled that he worked as personal assistant to his father, Chakufwa, when the latter served as Second Vice-President of Malawi.
“As a church, you must pray for us. I usually say those who have not seen the devil, must join politics, you meet the devil face to face,” said Chihana.
Chakwera, who is Malawi Congress Party leader, also called on the synod to continue praying for Malawi’s freedom and unity.
“The church understands the philosophy of foundations. We must resist the temptation to prioritise short-term political targets over the long-term foundational work that will benefit present and future generations,” he said.
Former vice-president Khumbo Kachali could not leave the stage without his trademark political banter and his target was Kabambe.
He thanked the UTM Party leader for attending the conference, saying his participation was a sign that he could rise politically.
In his address, CCAP Livingstonia Synod General Secretary William Tembo said the church was ready to support government.
He welcomed Chihana’s message of unity, saying the government’s commitment to continuing projects started by the previous administration sent an important signal about national unity and continuity.
The conference, which began on August 21, concludes today.
