Just a Coincidence

The new nation called Malawi?

I read with deep sorrow that the affairs of the State are preventing the first couple from enjoying a honeymoon. These people have just been married and have not had the time to know each other a little more than they used to. But the same can be said about the rise to the presidency by Peter Mutharika. This is the first time he was becoming president of this great country and one would have thought the new government would have gone on honeymoon. They have not. You need to have your honeymoon Mr. President, although belated. But when you do, you should select the time appropriate for not only you, but the company you work for.

Mr. President, I just wanted to know whether there are still some nyaphaphis removing Escom transformers in this country? I want to know whether the First Lady now is making you eat mabunzu or imphwa, nkhanando and makata a nandolo? Your honeymoon would have allowed the first lady to know from you why mwiri smells like rice and why you like ntandaza. Let me leave you here my president.

I have followed the issue of the proposed Republican Constitutional review when some of us are proposing that we perhaps need 50+1 percent for the election of the president. I am yet to be convinced that would allow us to select a popular president than we do. I hope I will be convinced as time goes by so I also join the bandwagon. It is good also we are talking about this when the next elections are five years ahead. I would have loved if the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) tried this proposal. I was talking of the electoral commission may be trying this at a school committee elections, if Football Association of Malawi (FAM) could allow this, have the proposal tried there. In that way we can assess how it feels like to lose at the re-run when one was winning in the first round. We would also know the acceptability of the electorate to the planned change of the national elections. Now, you may ask why small schools and FAM should allow to be used as guinea pigs. My answer would be if the 50+ 1 idea was good, why would FAM not wish to be part of progress? If 50+1 was progressive, then many institution should be joining the bandwagon as that is the most sensible thing to do, not so?

It is interesting that some district commissioners (DCs) have been trimmed to size. Would this not go down to the village headmen who have emerged over the past five years? Senior chief this, paramount chief that and traditional authority this?

  1. I fail to understand your entries Dr. Muula – why do you always write about many (more often 3) unrelated topics into one entry? This makes your pieces uninteresting to read!
