Thousands mourns Nyamilandu’s fiancee

Thousands of mourners, including the sports fraternity, government officials, politicians and relatives on Tuesday paid their last respects to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu’s fiancee Maria Inglis who was laid to rest at her home at Chitakale in Mulanje District.

Inglis died at Balaka District Hospital on Saturday after suffering internal injuries in a road accident that also claimed the life of her aunt Effie Kadzakumanja.

The body of Inglis was interred at around 4.50pm at a family farm in Mangani Village.

Among those that attended the funeral included People’s Party (PP) and UDF officials, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Alex Mseka, Sports Council executive secretary George Jana, Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) president Oscar Kanjala, FAM executive members, Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general secretary Helene Mpinganjira, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Innocent Bottomani, Flames, Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers officials and players.

Nyamilandu openly wept as he bade farewell to the remains of his fiancee.

The accident occured at a place called Chitale, between Phalula and Senzani trading centres, along the M1 Road when the vehicle they were travelling in, overturned a couple of times as Nyamilandu, who was driving, was trying to avoid a protruding load on a truck coming in the opposite direction.
