Thyolo Nice drills councillors, committees on their roles
National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has trained councillors, ward committee members and neighbourhood committee representatives from Luchenza Municipal Council in Thyolo District on their roles and responsibilities.
Speaking at Luchenza Municipal Council Hall on Wednesday, Nice Thyolo programmes officer Moses Kaunda said the training was aimed at equipping participants with skills and knowledge to serve their wards with transparency and accountability.
“We organised the training bearing in mind that the various committees had just been constituted and lacked knowledge and skills on how to perform their various roles and responsibilities and how the council sources its funds,” he said.
Kaunda said the training empowered the participants to execute their duties diligently to enhance the council’s development.
“Additionally, the training will improve revenue collection since the ward committee acts as agents between the people and the service providers,” he stressed.
The council’s chief executive officer McPhine Mzumara thanked Nice Trust for organising the training.
“The knowledge imparted will assist the ward committees to formulate development activities that reflect the needs of the areas they are representing,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of participants, Mapanga ward councillor Wyson Movilikana said the meeting has helped them to know their roles and responsibilities and how to share synergies or collaborate with the members of Parliament in the district.
During the training, Nice Trust informed the participants about the electoral laws and the need for the leaders to raise awareness among the people on the changes.
Nice Trust held the training with funding from European Union-funder Boma Lathu Project
