Thyolo District Council has received over K58 million (about $145 000) for the Social Cash Transfer to be implemented in the district.

Making the donation after closing a consultative meeting on Monday, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare Anita Kalinde said the project seeks to transform the lives of most vulnerable and poor households.

“The first seven districts where this programme is in operation are Chitipa, Likoma, Mangochi, Machinga, Phalombe, Mchinji and Salima. It is being extended to other eight new districts of Thyolo, Zomba, Balaka, Nsanje, Chikhwawa, Neno, Mzimba, and Mulanje.

“In the districts, the programme is already operational, most vulnerable and poor households have been economically empowered, built better houses, bought live stocks, children are enrolled and returned to school, improved nutritional status and some have been weaned and linked to other socio-economic programmes (Public Works Programme and Comsip),” said Kalinde.

She said the programme will benefit 15 000 households of the 600 000 population.
