Tigresses start OG Issa title defence

Complex Tigresses start their title defence of the OG Issa Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) this Sundaywith games against Gold Sisters and Aquaid Queens at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC).

The outfit won the league for the first time in over five years despite suffering a 24-25 defeat by their hottest rivals Diamonds, thanks to a better aggregate score.

However, Tigresses team manager Hellene Mpinganjira said yesterday that they would do anything possible to avoid losing a single match this season.

Tigresses were exempted from the league’s first fixtures alongside Diamonds and MTL Queens because they had contributed key players to the national team which participated in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Currently, Shizaella Sisters, who take on MTL Queens at the BYC on Saturday, are at the summit of the log table with 12 points from four wins, but Mpinganjira believes the Sisters’ lead will be a mere flash in a frying pan as Tigresses start their campaign.

“We will not gamble by taking some games as not very important. We are keen to completing our games without a single loss. Therefore, any team that comes our way should know they are getting into a slaughter house,” she said.

However, it would be absurd to count out Diamonds and MTL Queens in the title chase as the former won the crown for five consecutive times while Queens have undergone a rebuilding exercise for the past two years.

Diamonds begin the season with encounters against Chilomoni Sisters and Prison Sisters on Saturday.
