Malawi on Saturday emerged winner of the Rotary Bed Race in which the charity group raised over K1 million (about $3 000) in aid of Mzuzu Central Hospital.

The champions clocked 1:98 minutes in a race that took place at Mzuzu High Court grounds.

The winners set from the court premises riding with a patient on the bed to somewhere around Mzuzu Youth Centre and back. Then from Mzuzu City round-about to NBS Bank and back.

Toyota Malawi subdued all its competitors, beating teams such as FMB, Malawi Revenue Authority, Nico General and Northern Region Water Board.

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) second group came second in 2:01 minutes while Mzuzu University was third in 2:09 minutes.

As champions, Toyota Malawi carted home K50 000 (about $125) while MDF 2 pocketed K30 000 (about $75) as Mzuni received K20 000 (about $62.50).

“It is great to win at a competition such as this one,” Edward Chando, one of the team’s members, told journalists.

Guest of honour, Mzuzu City chief executive officer Thomas Chirwa thanked those that took part in the event, saying Rotarians complement government efforts in addressing challenges Malawians face. He appealed to other well-wishers to emulate the gesture.

Mzuzu Rotary president Naomi Lwanja said the money raised from the event with will be used to buy beds for the hospital. She said it was a disheartening to see patients sleep on the floor.
