Traders team up to clean market

Traders at Ngwenya Market in Lilongwe have embarked on a clean-up campaign to improve hygiene and sanitation at the market.

The campaign followed complaints from communities about poor sanitation at the market.

Speaking on Friday during the clean-up exercise, one of the traders Gracian Msampha said in the face of cholera outbreaks in some parts of the country, it was important to practise hygiene.

“There are some people who dump waste anywhere, which contributes to poor sanitation,” he said.

Ngwenya Ward councillor Joe Katalama said everyone around the market, especially traders, have the responsibility to keep the market clean.

“Communities should understand that the market belongs to them as they are the ones using it, as such, they are supported to keep it clean,” he said.

Katalama said they will engage traders and people in proper waste management.

Ngwenya Market chairperson Kassim Kwilindi said the campaign will encourage market users to come together to combat poor hygiene at the market.

“The initiative is welcome because it will not only build a sense of ownership for the campaign, but it will also motivate collective effort in finding ways to combat poor hygiene around the market,” he said.
