Malawi Minister of Mines, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Atupele Muluzi has disclosed that two of the three fuel reserves being constructed in the country have been completed.

The two fuel reserves, in Mzuzu and Lilongwe, have capacities of 10 and 25 million litres respectively.

In an interview on Tuesday, Muluzi said the completion of the reserves would increase the fuel buffer to about four months from the current 14 days.

“These strategic fuel silos are a gateway to boosting the country’s development because they are being constructed in such a way that the country would have fuel for up to three and half months.

“Currently, we are in the final stages of the two fuel reserves while the other one [in Blantyre] is expected to be finalised in the next three months,” said Muluzi.

Muluzi was noncommittal, however, on the total cost of the project but in the 2013/2014 National Budget, Parliament approved a US$ 340 million loan for government to construct fuel reserves in all the three regions.
