Omar: PP is responsible

United Democratic Front (UDF) says the People’s Party (PP) logo, which depicts an open lock, is an indication of the party’s involvement in the cashgate through which billions of taxpayers’ money was stolen.

But PP spokesperson Hophmally Makande described UDF’s statement as baseless, saying the former ruling party has run out of ideas.

UDF vice-president Iqbar Omar said this during a political rally he addressed at Area 36 in Lilongwe last Thursday.

He said the logo indicates that PP left public coffers open so that everybody could get money at his will.

Said Omar: “The current regime is responsible for the Capital Hill looting. There are a lot of malpractices that are taking place in government. For example, some members of the ruling party have been offering themselves payments for services and goods they never offered. [Just] look at the ruling party’s logo; it’s an open lock, which means public coffers have been left open for them to embezzle public money.”

But Makande disputed the claims.

“We [PP] have heard opposition parties poking fun at our logo. But this just shows that these parties, including UDF, have run out of ideas. They are supposed to argue on pertinent issues that can benefit Malawians not logos. This is not the way we campaign. They should wait for us to see how a clean campaign goes. Our logo indeed is an open lock, but has nothing to do with cashgate,” he said in an interview.

  1. Then what will UDF do on this issue suppose they win elections. No party is telling us what they will do should they enter government next year. What will they do with those people who have stolen our money. Imagine JB using our money traveling to Nigeria several times just to attend church prayers and our Parliament, opposition clapping hands

  2. On this issue of cash gate it is real confusing to reasonable people especially when you hear the amount which is being mentioned in the papers and radios.
And when you go back to the first days of PP government when Amayi kept on saying that: Surely I have completely found nothing in the coffers of the Government. Now within 0ne and have years you hear people have been found with this lot of money in their houses and car boots. Now the question is:- Can an empty coffer produce a Billion? And if these people took the money during the previous government why should they be moving with it to day in their car boots? And were all these people in the government that time? Now since amayi took over she has been moving up and down in the country and out side countries? Doesn’t it mean Malawians are being squized hard to give such money by the means of tax, so much that amayi has enough to move around to run the government ? and at the same time have such a surplus that other people are found with billions in their car boots? If this money was taken during the previous government why should these people still be keeping them in their boots? This means something wrong somewhere some how? !!!!!!! Food for thought.!!!!?
