UK Judiciary head to visit Malawi
Chief Justice of England and Wales Lord Burnett of Maldon is set to visit Malawi from June 1 to 3 to strengthen links with the country’s Judiciary, among other tasks, according to the British High Commission.
In a statement released yesterday, the commission said while in Malawi, the Chief Justice, who is head of the British Judiciary, will undertake numerous engagements.
Reads part of the statement: “Lord Burnett will meet key contacts in Malawi’s Judiciary and representatives of legal and human rights bodies.
“He will visit the Supreme Court and hold meetings with the judge president of the Supreme Court judges, among others.”
While in the country, the UK Chief Justice will also deliver a public lecture at the University of Malawi’s School of Law and Governance. The statement quotes acting British High Commissioner Olympia Wereko-Brobby as having expressed excitement with Burnnett’s visit.
She said: “His visit will explore areas of mutual collaboration with key interlocutors in the judicial sector.
“As Commonwealth sister nations, we believe the UK and Malawi can learn a lot from each other on the dispensation of justice and fostering the rule of law in a democracy.”
According to a notice from University of Malawi’s School of Law and Governance, which is under the Department of Public Law and Clinical Legal Education, the public lecture will be held on June 2.
The notice states that the public lecture will be held under the topic ‘Judicial independence and accountability in the 21st century: Challenges and opportunities’.
