UN celebrates 60 years in Malawi
The United Nations (UN) is celebrating its 60 years in Malawi with a declaration that the youth are not just beneficiaries of development, but drivers of change.
The sentiments come at a time the UN in Malawi and government reflect on their 60 year partnership in national development.
In a statement celebrating the milestone released on Wednesday, UN resident coordinator Rebecca Adda-Dontoh emphasized that as the country forges ahead, youths have a critical role to play if the country is to realise its dreams.

She stated: “For 60 years, the United Nations has stood alongside Malawi in its pursuit of economic transformation, sustainable development, resilience, sustaining peace and communities and progress. From responding to natural disasters to promoting public health, education, and national peace architecture, our partnership has been instrumental in addressing challenges and seizing opportunities.”
“As climate change continues to pose significant risks to the nation’s agriculture, livelihoods, and communities, the role of young people in climate action has never been more critical.”
Since joining the UN in 1964, Malawi has worked towards achieving global commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Malawian presidents have been travelling to the United States of America for the United Nations General Assembly (Unga) to join other member States in making global policies and presenting the country’s progress in enhancing the global goals.
Likewise, the UN has supported the country in addressing issues of hunger, poverty, natural disasters and public health challenges.
In an interview UN-Malawi associate communications officer Bennet Phunyanya said the official celebrations will be held next Thursday at Malingunde Resource Centre for the Blind in Lilongwe.
