UN Women empowers NGO

UN Women has donated equipment to Go Fund A Girl Child, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Mangochi, to strengthen its capacity in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV), teenage pregnancies and child marriages in the district.

Speaking on Friday during the handover of the items, which comprised a laptop, camera, desktop computer, printer and papers, UN Women country representative Clara Anyangwe said they wanted to equip the youth with resources to work effectively.

“As UN Women, we want the country to be free from GBV. This is possible if we have people who are well-resourced and empowered to fight the vice,” she said. 

Anyangwe said it is important for the youth to drive the agenda of change themselves because it is easy to reach out to their fellow youths.

Mangochi Nkungulu legislator Aisha Mambo Adams (United Democratic Front), who is also Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, said the equipment will help the youth to fight GBV and child marriages.

She asked the youth to scale up their activities in hard-to-reach areas.

The organisation’s executive director, Prudence Chavula said the equipment came at the right time when they have lined up many activities.

UN Women supported the organisation with funding from the Embassy of Iceland.
