Minister of Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima says the country has the potential to achieve aspirations spelt out in Malawi 2063 if graduates from institutions of higher learning are innovative in wealth creation.

She expressed the sentiments yesterday at University of Malawi (Unima) in Zomba where 2 483 graduates were awarded certificates, diplomas and degrees in various programmes.

This was Unima’s first 2023 congregation and Unima Vice-Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu presided over the graduation on behalf of President of Lazarus Chakwera, who is the Unima Chancellor.

The minister said graduates are the engines of development for every society as they have the capacity to transform the locally available knowledge and resources into profitable investments.

Said Wirima: “Invest in research, be ethical and hard-working for the country to benefit from your knowledge and skills.”

The minister further challenged the graduates to refrain from corruption and any selfish behaviour that may hinder the development of the country.

She further challenged them to be innovative and creative in solving their individual and national problems instead of plundering public resources for personal benefits.

In his statement, Sajidu said the university is reconstituting its programmes to offer courses that will capacitate graduates with knowledge that will be able to respond to the country’s scientific, economic, health, cultural and social needs.

He said the migration from the faculties academic system to schools is a milestone to enable the institution remains instrumental in the provision of quality education in the country and beyond.

“The university sends out these graduates to the world to serve with passion and productiveness,” he said.

Malawi University for Business and Applied Sciences bachelor of accountancy graduate Patience Mulele stated that the knowledge acquired from the university has empowered them to be instrumental in national development.

“We are committed to serve,” she said.

Academic awards were conferred to graduands that successfully completed their studies in various programmes at Unima (formerly Chancellor College), Mubas (formerly The Polytechnic under Unima), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (formerly Kamuzu College of Nursing and College of Medicine, both under Unima before the unbundling).

The students were selected into the universities through Unima before delinking of the universities.
