The partners, Desert Research Institute (DRI) and Development Action for Marginalised Rural Areas (Damra), say they have donated the equipment to ensure people consume safe water in the district.

In an interview on Sunday, Desert Research Institute senior assistant Braimah Apambire said the collaboration with the university will improve water monitoring and sanitation in the district.

“While the university will use the equipment for their normal water and sanitation classes, they will also offer water testing services to the community in the district, making sure that the water that communities consume is free from harmful elements,” he said.

University of Livingstonia deputy vice-chancellor Professor Bernard Kamanga said the equipment will enable critical research on water safety.

“The equipment will support the university’s technical ability to conduct regular and vigorous quality water testing, thereby contributing to evidence-based decision-making and improved public health outcomes,” he said.

Rumphi district water officer Laurent Mwalwanda said the equipment will help to detect contamination in water.

“Most communities in Rumphi rely on surface water and the initiative will help improve the quality of water because there will be more tests,” he said.
