One person died on the spot whereas others are receiving treatment at Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) after a vehicle veered off the road and hit them along the Mpunga-Mpondabwino Road in Malawi’s old capital, Zomba on Wednesday.

The accident happened at around 7:30 am near Likangala Bridge when the driver of the vehicle, registration MJ 6555 was headed from Mpunga Trading Centre to Zomba Town. The vehicle first hit the people, some of whom were traders along the road, before crushing into a nearby house.

It was a tragic moment as Chikanda residents close to the area rushed to the scene to rescue the injured people, while others, especially grief-stricken women stood by the road side.

Eastern Region Police spokesperson Thomeck Nyaude identified the driver of the vehicle as Matilda Osman, 33, from Bulaimana Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chikowi in the district and the deceased as a Mrs Chiwozi from Chiputa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mlumbe in the district.

“The driver (Osman) lost control of the vehicle soon after crossing Likangala Bridge. Some of the injured people are two primary school pupils who were on their way to school. One is in the intensive care unit (ICU) whereas others have been admitted to the hospital there,” said Nyaude.

ZCH administrator Fredson Kambeni confirmed receiving the injured persons, saying they are under close observation.
