VP gets tough on MDAs

Vice-President Michael Usi says heads of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) should not be afraid to fire officials found are frustrating projects aimed to improve service delivery through the Public Sector Reforms Programme.

He stressed this during his visit to Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) projects yesterday where he commended the board’s reforms that target improving revenue streams like the water bottling project which is almost on commissioning stage.

Usi, who is scheduled to inspect several projects that various MDAs are implementing under the government reforms programme, among others, appreciated LWB’s projects such as customer mobile App and water bottling projects.

But while commending the board for registering satisfactory strides in its reforms that aim at increasing revenue streams and improve service delivery, and branding the board as the top performer on reforms, he stressed that MDAs must dismiss employees that frustrate the projects.

Said Usi: “There are bad apples in every society, and looking at Lilongwe Water Board, they are a model of excellence as far as reforms implementation is concern so they should not at all leave the bad apples, they should dismiss the people that are not performing.”

Meanwhile, LWB chief executive officer Sili Mbewe said the K3.3 billion water bottling project is fully financed by its water bills revenues and that the project will add 25 jobs of which 50 percent have already been employed.

One of other reform projects Usi is expected to inspect is the initiatives aimed at growing the Liquefied Petroleum Gas usage by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority.

Public sector reforms are meant to improve the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of government. They include changes to laws, procedures, and the distribution of power in MDAs.
