Watch out for Nzika Wear fashion fest

As the country continues to celebrate the introduction of the first ever fashion week, the Malawi Fashion Week, established fashion designers Nzika Wear has announced their plans to add value to the fashion industry by holding the Nzika Wear Fashion festival this year.

Speaking in an interview, director of Nzika Wear Mwai Namaona said his office has always wanted to hold a fashion design festival, but felt it was immature to do so.

“We have been around for a long time but we felt we were not ready for that. 2013 is our year and if all goes as planned we are holding our first festival before the year closes,” said Namaona.

However, Namaona said Nzika Wear Festival will feature purely Nzika Wear products.

“We are a big company and we have lots of products which many people have never seen. We also have new designs and we want people to appreciate the work, that is why we have decided to make the foundational festival special for Nzika Wear products,” he said adding that the festival will take place in Blantyre.

Namaona added that the festival will exhibit fashion designs for all age groups and the focus will be on promoting Malawi’s culture in dressing.

“Fashion industry anchors the preservation of culture and we believe we can play a role.  We have seen several designs and I should not hide it, we are missing a point. In Malawi, we believe in clothes that maintain one’s dignity and that is what we want to promote ,”  he said.
