Water users association decries encroachment

Likoma Water Users Association has bemoaned encroachment on the water intake site, saying the action poses a threat to the quality of water customers will get.

The association’s local utility operator Jonathan Mkuyamba blamed fishers for tampering with the intake and constructing fish drying racks around the area.

Mkuyamba: Fishers should leave the place

He said: “This can end up contaminating the water.

“To this end, we engaged our board and the fishers through local leaders as well as fisheries officials to help us on the issue because an intake is not supposed to be used for other activities.”

Mkuyamba said they plan to dig two pit latrines for the fishers to prevent them from defaecating at the intake.

He said they have since given the fishers up to this weekend to vacate the association’s premises.

However, Sub-Traditional Authority Mwase said he had already engaged the fishers to consider moving to another place away from the intake site.

He said: “We are discussing with the fishers, but all they have asked us to help them find a place for their fishing activities.

“We hope by this weekend, all shall be well.”
