Malawi Assemblies of God national women’s director Chimango Mlowoka says poor shelter can increase risks to health and affect spiritual lives of people.

She said this on Tuesday in Senior Chief Malemia in Zomba when the church, through its women’s group, handed over a house to Agnes Chitenje in Domasi.

Mlowoka said in their 2023 strategic plan, they planned to construct a house for a needy woman.

“We made financial contributions through selling of wrap around cloth [zitenje] to raise funds for the purchase of house construction materials,” she said.

Speaking after receiving the house, Chitenje, a mother of three, said she has lived in a dilapidated house since her husband passed away.

She said that in the rainy seasons, she used to send her children to her neighbours to seek shelter while she remained in her dilapidated house.

“A home is important as it gives identity and safety,” she said.

In reaction, Chief Jalasi said the house, apart from bailing out the mother, has also added beauty to the community.

“Women are the backbone of families and communities and they need to be supported,” he said
