The inaugural National Wrestling Championships qualifier will be conducted at regional level this month, Malawi Wrestling Federation (MWF) executive committee member Bright Limani has confirmed.

In the meantime, only the Eastern Region has set a date and venue of their regional championships. The Southern, Central and Northern regions are yet to come up with such details.

According to Limani, who is also the Eastern Region Wrestling Committee (ERWC) chairperson, their qualifiers will be held on July 27 at Zomba Community Centre ground.

“All the regions have to conduct their qualifiers within July so that we can identify regional ambassadors for the inaugural national championships this August in Lilongwe. According to our work plan, each regional committee is at liberty to fix the actual date for their events.

“As for the Eastern Region, we have already made such arrangements and we are identifying corporate sponsors for our contest. Well-wishers can support in cash or kind and can contact us on 099 8006 416 or 088 1090 306,” he said.

Currently, Limani said the region’s 15 athletes, who will tussle in 15kgs, 61kg, 65kg and 72kg categories are undergoing intensive training ahead of the regional showdown.
