WVM equips Dowa youth with vocational skills
World Vision Malawi has equipped 28 youths from its Lipiri Area Development Programme with various vocational skills.
The 28 graduates,13 of whom are girls, have been trained in carpentry, bricklaying, welding, tailoring and fashion designing, among other trades.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Senior Chief Kayembe of Dowa applauded WVM for the training which she said will improve their livelihood.
The senior chief said the training came at the right time when most youths in her area were idle.
“My appeal to the graduating team is, that they should focus on developing their skills to improve living standards,” said Kayembe.
Speaking in a separate interview, WVM acting national director Innocent Pendame said it was the wish of the organisation to see most youths have something to do in the face of high unemployment rate.
“We want to see as many youth as possible engaging in businesses of their own and fending for themselves through various skills they have gained. We have also provided start-up materials to all students,” he said.
One of the graduating students Chifundo Chakwera was all smiles and applauded WVM officials for the training.
The training was conducted in partnership with Mponela Technical College.
