Karonga District Council has commended Pamoza Tingakwaniska Youth Organisation for training youths from Senior Chief Mwakaboko in Karonga on peace-building, prevention and mitigation of sexual violence in the district.

Speaking on Tuesday during the training at Iponga Community Day Secondary School, Karonga district youth officer Lapken Liwago said the training was in line with youth development and roles that they can play at school to make sure that there is no vandalism and unruly behaviour.

He said: “The training is important as it will ensure that the youth become agents of change. Peace is paramount anywhere in the world because it enhances development.

“Our hope is that after the training, the youth will spread this message to their friends so that we should have youths who can desist from damaging school property.”

Karonga community policing coordinator Maxwell Chimphonda said the training empowered the youth on how to prevent and report sexual violence.

“The training has empowered the youth to be proactive in reporting sexual violence if we are to end the vice in the district,” he said.

The school’s head girl Chimwemwe Gondwe said girls face challenges, including sexual violence and trafficking.

Pamoza Tingakwaniska Youth Organisation programmes manager Gomezgani Mhango said she was optimistic that the youth will promote peace and report sexual violence in the district.

The training was funded by Unicef through Foundation for Civic Education and Social Empowerment.
