Youths to promote literacy project in Mangochi District

Mangochi District Functional Literacy Programme (FLP) coordinator Baird Sonjera has asked community leaders from Traditional Authority Bwananyambi (T/A) to support youth leaders to champion initiatives that will transform the wellbeing of people.

He said this on Monday during a meeting that brought the youth together to discuss issues affecting the area.

Sonjera: Support the youth

The meeting followed the appointment of 12 youth champions aged under 16 nationwide by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) to be advisers of adolescents under the UN agency’s programmes.

In Mangochi, two youths, namely Bashr Hassan, 16, and Zaitoon Issa,15, from T/As Jalasi and Bwananyambi were appointed as board members.

Sonjera asked community leaders to give the champions support to facilitate  positive change in the area.

He said: “It is hard for the champions to effectively deliver messages on health, education and other crucial issues if community leaders do not support them.

“Please allow them to embark on interventions that can bring change to the lives of youths as well as the whole community.”

Sonjera cited FLP as one of the empowerment initiatives the champions will promote for more young people to become literate to successfully run businesses.

“These champions, who are also the graduates of FLP, will be in the forefront encouraging their fellow young people to enrol for education to hone numerical and literacy skills,” he said.

Mkumba Zone primary education adviser Mariam Sambo pledged her commitment to support the youth, saying they are critical to the country’s development.

“I have liked the initiative of involving the youth to lead Unicef’s programmes in our areas. This will motivate more youths to get involved in those interventions,” she said
