Chilima and others were travelling to Mzuzu enroute to Nkhata Bay to attend the funeral of former Minister of Justice Ralph Kasambara.

However, the plane they were travelling in did not land in Mzuzu as expected at 10am on Monday, and it was later reported missing. The plane, which crashed, was found on Tuesday in the Viphya Plantation where the bodies were retrieved.
