Zimbabweans await official presidential results
Zimbabweans are anxiously waiting for presidential results following Wednesday’s harmonised elections.
Although Zimbabwe is yet to announce official outcome, it has now become clear that President Robert Mugabe has a new lease of life at State House as his ZANU-PF’s landslide in parliamentary polls is anything to go by.
By midnight Thursday, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) official results showed that ZANU-PF had won 52 constituencies against 10 of Morgan Tsvangrai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Justice Rita Makarau, ZEC chairperson announced first official results at the central command center in Harare Thursday night.
Before close of business on Thursday, Tsvangrai had already spoken against the conduct of the harmonised elections calling it a huge farce.
But AU observers led by former Nigerian President Olesugun Obasanjo and a 25-member observer mission from SADC Electoral Commission endorsed the results.
SADC team leader Notembe Tjipueja, who is also chairperson of the EC of Namibia, has since called on all Zimbabweans to accept the outcome of the elections.
The ZEC will resume announcing results at 10 o’clock Friday August 2, 2013.
