Former US president Bill Clinton has urged Malawians to work hard to improve the country’s capacity on self -reliance.

Clinton spoke after touring Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) where his Clinton Development Foundation (CHF) supports the laboratory unit with equipment and medical resources.

“I have always known Malawians as hard-working people. However, I would like to urge you to work harder to achieve your development goals. We will be very happy to come next time as tourists and investors because you have already developed your country,” said Clinton.

He was also impressed with the progress of projects under the support of his foundation in health and agricultural sectors.

Malawi President Joyce Banda said Clinton has committed to supporting the Anchor Farm Project which seeks to empower small-scale farmers with resources to boost their productivity as one way of fighting hunger and malnutrition.

Banda said since the signing of an agreement with Clinton Development Foundation in 2007, over one million people have benefited from health services supported by the foundation and over 100 000 families are targeted in the Anchor Farm Project.

She said in the next phase of the foundation’s projects, focus will be on renewable energy and enlargement of Neno Hospital.

“Clinton has assured this country that in the next phase, the foundation will intensify renewable energy project to light up rural areas and will also extend Neno Hospital which does not have major facilities such as a mortuary,” said Banda.
