Issues of environment degradation are expected to reduce in Zomba thanks to Maluwa Ministries for the introduction of locally made energy saver stoves and use of banana leaves for cooking.
The initiative is being implemented in Group Village Head (GVH) Maluwa in the area of Senior Chief Chikowi.
In an interview on Wednesday, the Ministries’ coordinator Marica Bos said the project seeks to empower communities with knowledge and skills to protect the environment and improve their livelihood.
“We started this initiative about a year ago whereby communities are using locally available resources to improve their living status and which can also help to reduce degradation of the environment in their respective areas.
“We are trying to teach the people about foundations of farming which is a way of conservation farming where we use compost manure, and how they can save the nutritional values in foods when cooking. So we have the women clubs here because they are the ones that take care of the families. This can also assist them start small-scale businesses,” she said.
In his remarks, GVH Maluwa said the initiative has come at the time when the area is facing problems with climatic changes as a result of careless cutting down of trees.
