Carlsberg Malawi Limited officials yesterday met disgruntled Big Bullets players to resolve the issue of their outstanding allowances which led to them to boycott training for the whole week.

Apparently as of yesterday morning, the players had threatened to boycott this afternoon’s TNM Super League game against Moyale Barracks at Kamuzu Stadium.

Bullets chairperson Malinda Chinyama and one of the senior players confirmed their sponsor’s intervention.

“Carlsberg officials are expected to meet the players today to update them on the developments surrounding the issue of funding,” said Chinyama.

He also said it is their hope that after the meeting, the players would soften their stance.

However, Carlsberg Malawi senior brands manager [alcoholics] Twikale Chirwa could not be reached for comment.

On Friday, the club’s coaches Eddington Ng’onamo and Gerald Phiri Snr tried in vain to persuade the players to resume training as the issue of their dues was being looked into.

One of the club’s trustees, Jim Kalua, also met the players on Thursday, but it is reported that they stuck to their guns.

Asked if they are ready to take to the pitch this afternoon, one of the senior players said: “Our focus is on the issue at hand. We have not even discussed the game, but I would assume that if they pay us our dues then we’ll play.”

However, the club’s general secretary Higger Mkandawire said whatever the case, today’s game is on.

“The issue is still under discussion and we are in the process of trying to find a solution.

“It’s not like the money involved is millions or billions of kwachas, we’ll get to the bottom of it and I can assure soccer fans that the game is definitely on,” said Mkandawire. n
