Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe of Rumphi has asked government to fast-track upgrading of Rumphi-Nyika Road to bitumen if the Nyika National Park is to have an impact in the tourism industry.

The road that passes through the park is in bad condition and becomes almost impassable during the rainy season.

Chikulamayembe: The road is in bad condition

Speaking during the translocation of 34 elephants to the park from Liwonde National Park on Wednesday, Chikulamayembe said efforts to increase the population of elephants in the park to attract more tourists will be meaningless if government does not rehabilitate the road.

“I am asking government to prioritise the upgrading of this road because it is in bad condition,” he said.

During the commissioning of the Chitipa Water Supply Project last week, President Peter Mutharika promised to upgrade the Rumphi-Nyika-Nthalire Road.

He, however, did not provide a time-frame for the project.

Nyika National Park is one of the 26 amazing places to visit in Africa, according to the CNN Travel.

With the 34 elephants, the Park is now estimated to have about 134 elephants.n
