The First Lady, Gertrude Mutharika has pleaded with Malawians to sympathise with orphans, and include them when planning for the care of their children.

She made the remarks during the launch of the Gertrude Mutharika Build programme at Mnongwa Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chadza in Lilongwe on Friday.

The programme, which is championed by Habitat for Humanity, is aimed at raising funds for constructing decent houses for orphans and vulnerable people.

“We all know the plight of orphans and it is our duty to take care of them because we never know who will be an orphan tomorrow.

The good that we do to an orphan today, will be a blessing to our child when we are gone,” said Mutharika.

She said child vulnerability is manifested in different ways such as being raised by an old grandparent, a fellow child or a single poor parent, and this hinders their progress in education.

Habitat for Humanity board chairperson Jallison Chaguluka said the programme has been launched to raise funds, which will be used for the construction of more houses for orphans and vulnerable people.

“So far, we have constructed 35 000 houses nationwide and each house costs K3 million. In this programme, we are targeting to raise funds for constructing 12 houses for needy people in T/A Chadza,” said Chaguluka
