Dossani Trust on Monday donates K2.2 million (about $5 500) to Kunyanja Development Organisation, for the completion works at Tukombo health centre.

The NGO executive secretary Emily Chinthu thanked the trust for their kind gesture.

She said many lives in the area are lost because of the long distance to the nearest hospitals.

“Delay in completion of this hospital has seen so many lives being lost because of the distance to the nearest hospital. Tukombo and the adjacent clinics have no ambulance and in emergencies, they have to call an ambulance from Chintheche Clinic which is about 40 kilometres away. When the problem is severe, they have to travel 90 kilometres to Nkhata Bay District Hospital,” she said.

A trustee of Dossani Trust, Dinker Raval, said it was a pity that the health centre has remained idle for the past 12 years.

“It appears that everything is in place except for a septic tank and drainage system. According to estimates, K2.2 million is required to complete the unfinished works so that the health centre is up and running. So the trustees of Dossani Trust have agreed to donate this amount so that the health centre is operational,” said Raval.

The health centre has 15 rooms with beds, mattresses and other facilities. Kunyanja Development Organisation is a non-profit organisation in Traditional Authority Zilakoma in Nkhata Bay.
