Kalondolondo programme manager Jephter Mwanza has rated Nkhotakota District Council at 80 percent in the implementation of Public Works Programme (PWP), following an assessment conducted in the district to appreciate knowledge of facility users.

“We have held similar meetings in nine districts but out of those districts only Salima is ahead of Nkhotakota regarding implementation of the public works program.

“This is our second time to conduct an assessment in Nkhotakota and we have noted that there is consistency in implementation of projects,” he said last week in his remarks when winding up an interface meeting involving the council officials and the rural people to share results of the assessment.

Presenting the findings of the assessment, Centre for Sustainable Community Development (CSCD) programme manager Lusayo Mwanganya said 25 facilities were sampled to participate in the assessment which used the scorecard process to come up with the findings.

“Thirteen indicators guided the assessment team in conducting focus group discussions which scored each of the indicators according to people’s knowledge and involvement.

“Of these 13 indicators, Nkhotakota got 100 percent in eight indicators and the council managed to institute all the projects that were designated for implementation,” he said.

Mwanganya, however, said in most projects, environment committee was not available because out of 25 projects, only eight are having the committees.

He indicated that all roads and land resources projects had no community environment committees, adding that delay in provision of working materials also compromised adherence of some projects to technical standards.—Mana
