The search for the country’s next beauty queen enters its second phase with organisers embarking on regional finals.

Mzuzu takes the first call up on November 5 during an event scheduled to take place at the Grand Palace Hotel.

Nine contestants are expected to parade on the red carpet before the judges as they seek to be among the 15 queens scheduled to compete at the national finals.

Miss Malawi project spokesperson Teresa Ndanga says the nation should expect stiff competition among the contestants given that the crop is not only beautiful, but also intelligent.

She said: “We are in the final stage of our preparations for the regional finals which start on November 5 in Mzuzu. We will then proceed to the Central Region on December 3 and Southern Region on January 28 2017.

“We anticipate tough competition among the nine contestants in Mzuzu. In total, we have 34 models scheduled to battle it out for the 15 slots for the national finals.”

The regional finals will see the queens competing in four categories.

“There will be a parade in traditional, office, evening, casual and swim wear. Then there will be an assessment in public speaking abilities which will be gauged through the introductions and during question time.

“Then there will be an assessment on the form, figure and posture, especially in swim wear. Apart from that, the judges will be looking at grooming and appearance, grace, coordination and composure while the models are in evening wear,” added Ndanga.

She said the judges will also be looking at the most relevant responses to questions surrounding the theme which is overpopulation.

Those who will be successful in the regional finals will contest in the national finals scheduled to take place in Lilongwe on April 29 next year.

Organisers of the 2016/17 Miss Malawi pageant, leading media houses Nation Publications Limited (NPL) and Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS), have since reiterated their call for sponsors to come in.

“We are still in the process of identifying a main sponsor, but we are making progress. Apart from the benefits that they would enjoy as a platinum sponsor, our main partner will also work with the 2016/17 queen who would be an ambassador for the company or organisation.

“Platinum sponsors will enjoy a range of benefits, including attractive advertising packages at the venue. They will also enjoy advertising benefits with ZBS and NPL beyond the Miss Malawi national final. We also have Gold and Silver categories which also have attractive benefits,” said Ndanga. n
