The national identity (ID)  cards registration exercise is set to start today in Likoma District.

The National Registration Bureau (NRB) has since deployed 17 officers for the exercise.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, NRB spokesperson Norman Fulatira said the exercise on Likoma and Chizumulu islands is expected to take 25 days.

“Eight teams of our officers arrived in Likoma on Monday and are expected to start the registration process by Wednesday [today],” he said.

Although the district, comprising Likoma and Chizumulu islands, lies few kilometres from Mozambique, Fulatira said the possibility of Mozambicans registering was low because of the sensitisation campaigns conducted in the district.

In his remarks, Traditional Authority Mkumpha from Likoma said his subjects have been advised not to abet foreigners to register.

Likoma district commissioner (DC) Charles Mwawembe said although Likoma is complex because of intermarriages with Mozambicans, they will use their own cleaning system to prevent foreigners from registering. n
