There was pandemonium soon after the game at Zomba Community Centre ground yesterday when police fired tear gas to disperse Mighty Wanderers fans who bayed for referee Denis Ngulube’s blood for a red-card decision on Diverson Chilemba.

The Nomads were playing Red Lions in a TNM Super League match which ended in 1-1 draw. Chilemba was given marching orders for simulation in the six-yard area, a decision which did not go down well with the Nomads faithful.

After the final whistle, Wanderers coach Stewart Mbolembole confronted Ngulube for an explanation on why he sent off Chilemba.

It soon became free-for-all affair as fans invaded the pitch, but the police and the stewards came to the rescue of the officiating personnel and escorted them to the changing room.

Thereafter, tear gas was fired to disperse fans who had crowded the dressing room demanding Ngulube’s head. Supporters scampered for safety while journalists struggled to get interviews from team officials.

Substitute Mayeso Mphanje put Nomads ahead in the 65th minute with a beautiful finish after he was put through by Alfred Manyozo Jnr. A few minutes later, Kumbukani Mwambene equalised for Red Lions following a well worked one-two situation with Innocent Bokosi inside the goal area.

  1. violence is not the way to go for the Beautiful game.and mostly, spectators need to hold their guns, win or loose.don,t spoil our beautiful game.

  2. I am told there was also violence at Balaka Stadium when the same Nomads players fought with their Mponela counterparts. All this happening when Nomads have been banned at Kamuzu Stadium, can’t they learn to do without violence. Sad that it is coaches who incite violence. Do refs explain decisions to coaches? Even if they did, would that be done soon after the game, inside the pitch. Let’s be civilized Mr Mbolembole (Zonse boo)
