Malawi President Peter Mutharika says 2014 was successful in improving the country’s economy.

Mutharika was speaking on Thursday at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre when he hosted different religious leaders from the Southern Region to a State banquet.

The banquet was to celebrate the New Year and thank God for His blessings to the nation.

“I take this time to appreciate the support and prayers from you all in 2014. When I called for prayers for rains, you honoured my request and organised special prayers in your denominations.

“It is, therefore, encouraging that some parts of the country have received rains. As such, we should continue praying for the whole country to receive good rains and have bumper harvest,” said Mutharika.

He added that it was through prayers Malawi beat some economic challenges.

The President pleaded with all Malawians to exercise patience for the country to reach its full potential.

CCAP Blantyre Synod general secretary the Reverend Alex Maulana and Bishop Montfort Stima of Mangochi Diocese expressed optimism that God will see the nation through all challenges.

Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) president Sheikh Dinala Chabulika described the gathering as a unity enhancer among interdenominational leaders.
