Five people drowned in the Shire River on Monday when a canoe they were sailing in capsized. They were travelling from Mozambique to Nsanje.

According to Jessie Madziafewe of Ndenguma Village in Traditional Authority Malemia’s area in the district, four of the deceased were members of the same family.

Said Madziafewe:  “They comprise my sister, Loveness Matulo, 40, who was married and was living in Mozambique; her children Emmanuel, aged seven and three-year-old Rabecca, and our nephew Precious Mpasanjesi who was seven. They were coming to see us.”

She said she did not have the particulars of the fifth person, the canoeist who is a Mozambican national.

Madziafewe said the matter was reported to Nsanje Police Station.
