VP welcomes Amecea high command
Vice-President Saulos Chilima yesterday welcomed the Association of Member of Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (Amecea) high command led by its patron Cardinal John Njue at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe.
The delegation is in the country for the 18th Plenary Session of Amecea which Malawi is hosting.
Besides Chilima, a Catholic faithful himself, Njue and his entourage of bishops were also welcomed by Archbishop Tarcius Ziyaye of the Lilongwe Catholic Archdiocese.
Briefing journalists upon arrival, Njue said they have brought a message of self-reliance to the church in Malawi.
He said: “For a long time, the church in Africa has been looking for help from Rome. Time has come for us as a church to be self reliant. We have to take responsibility for the mission of the church and must not look to America or Rome.”
The theme for this year’s session is New Evangelisation Through True Conversion and Witnessing in Church.
In his remarks, Ziyaye said people must live their lives witnessing the true Christian life and mot mere talk.
The Amecea conference has brought together 300 delegates, including cardinal and bishops from 11 countries of Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, Eretria, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and hosts Malawi.
