Nyirenda: No room for friendly match

The Junior Flames face Zambia in the 2015 CAF Youth Championship third-round qualifier on August 16 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre without playing any international friendly game.

Malawi was expected to take on Lesotho, but the junior Lesotho team failed to travel to Blantyre at the eleventh hour due to financial problems as the Lesotho government did not release funds for the trip.

FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said the association will not secure another friendly due to time limit and financial constraints.

“Currently, we cannot find another alternative. We don’t have enough time and resources to secure another team to play with us. Note that for any international team to come and play a friendly match, there is need for good and systematic logistics. At the moment, we don’t have enough funds,” he said.

Nyirenda said the team will continue playing Super League sides in preparation for the Zambia game.

To reach this step, Malawi Under-20 national football team beat Botswana and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the previous rounds. They won away games after drawing at home.

Flames Under-20 coach Ernest Mtawali said the team is still looking for qualification and they would try to win the Zambia game at home despite the drawbacks.
