Temwa bags first US award

US-based Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga bagged her first award in the US on Thursday after being named National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Month for June.

The Kansas City (KC) Current forward was a model of modesty when asked what it means to her, attributing it to team work.

Temwa: It’s not only about me

The 2023 overall world top scorer scored six goals in four matches, including two goals and added extra spice with two assists.

She said: “It’s not only about me, it’s the entire team. I stood out because of all my team-mates and we have won this together.”

The 25-year-old scored in every match in June, outscoring 10 NWSL clubs on her own.

KC current coach Vlatko Andonovski waxed lyrical about her striker. She was quoted by the club’s website kansascitycurrent.com as saying: “She’s been amazing for us. She scores goals, she assists on goals.

”She has been very impactful in the games, even when she doesn’t score.”

Temwa enters the Olympic break tied for first in the Golden Boot race with Orlando Pride’s Zambian striker Barbara Banda on 12 goals.

Her tally is the club record for goals scored in a single season and the club, which lies second in the 14-team top flight with 35 points in 16 matches, has 10 regular season matches remaining. KC Current trail leaders Orlando by three points.
