German university to empower Malawi nurses

President Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday engaged the leadership of Lübeck University of Germany on the possibility of the institution training Malawian nurses in specialised areas.

The President lobbied for capacity building in the prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Malawi’s health sector which he says is key to building sustainable communities.

Chakwera greets the university’s leaders

Chakwera said this during a meeting with a delegation from Lübeck University Clinic who expressed interest to help the country through training of nurses.

Malawi has one specialised nurse in dialysis while the rest are trained as general nurses.

Currently, government is training another lot of specialised nurses at Kamuzu University of Health and Sciences and Lübeck University Clinic will help train some.

The university’s head of delegation Professor Kristina Kusche-Vihrog said they are geared to help Malawi adopt new systems and technologies towards a healthier society.

“We are committed to helping Malawi build on its capacity and adopt new technologies in overcoming challenges in the medical field,” she said.

The development aligns with the Health Sector Strategic Plan, among other requirements, to promote the specialisation of the nursing profession for effective service delivery.
