Potable water excites teachers, learners

Teachers and learners at Kulanga LEA Primary School, Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu District say they are pleased that they can now access potable water at the schoool.

In an interview on Monday, the school’s head teacher Thomas Chauluka said in November 2023, World Vision Malawi installed a mechanised water system at the school which has improved access to clean water.

“The school, with 885 learners, including 450 girls, had no water facility. The learners and teachers used to drink water from a borehole about 500 metres away from the school,” he said.

Chauluka said due to congestion at the borehole, children were always late for classes after break.

He said: “But now the kiosk at the school has improved access to clean water. Children no longer delay go get back to class after break.

“The school is also looking tidy because learners are able to clean classrooms every day. World Vision also installed kiosks in villages surrounding the school, which has enabled learners to have full access to the kiosk at the school.”

The school’s water committee treasurer Martha Uta said the kiosk has also relieved teachers of the burden to go to the village to draw water.

“They now access it right on the school campus,” she said.

Uta said to ensure the kiosk is protected, the committee members contribute K1 000 each for maintenance works.

“We also advise learners to use the facility properly,” she said.
