People hail social cash transfer e-payment

Beneficiaries of Social Cash Transfer Programme in Mzimba District have expressed satisfaction with the migration to electronic payment (e-payment) system, saying it is convenient and safe.

Previously, the safety net beneficiaries used to walk to an assembly point to get their stipend as the payment system was manual.

Speaking after cashing her money on Saturday, one of the beneficiaries, Eunice Jere from Mabiri in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mzukuzuku, said receiving money through mobile phone will help her cut transport costs.

She said: “I welcome this new system because previously we used to travel long distances to get our money, which was costly.

“But now, things will be different as I will be receiving my money through my phone and I will be cashing out when I want. This will also help me to save money.”

Another beneficiary, Reuben Theu from Kajepu Village said the e-payment system is convenient as no one will know when they have received the money.

“This is significant because it has brought privacy, thereby reducing the risks of being robbed. It will also ensure we receive our money in time,” he said.

Wealthnet chief executive officer Peter Matumbo, whose company KakuPay is providing the services, said besides few hiccups, he was impressed with how things have started.

“We have registered few challenges, but we are improving to ensure all beneficiaries receive their money at the same time,” he said.

On his part, M’Mbelwa District Council social welfare officer responsible for Social Cash Transfer Programme Shadreck Mingo urged beneficiaries to keep their PIN code safe to avoid being duped by others.

He said many beneficiaries have invested in livestock such as chicken, goats and pigs.

Government is implementing the programme with support from the European Union in Mzimba District.
