Parastatal workers demand 30% salary rise

Statutory corporations’ unionists have formally demanded a 30 percent salary adjustment for parastatal employees in the 2025/26 financial year, citing the deteriorating economic environment and escalating cost of living.

In a memo addressed to the Comptroller of Statutory Corporations Peter Simbani and copied to key government stakeholders including the Secretary to the Treasury, the representatives have expressed dissatisfaction with the current remuneration framework.

“We are very much concerned with the inadequate salary adjustment given the current economic realities in the country,” reads the memo in part.

According to the memo, salary increments for parastatal workers have remained stagnant for over a decade.

The unionists have since given the government 14 days from the date of the letter to respond to their demands.

In a separate interview yesterday, Simbani said he did not receive the letter.

He said: “While that is the case, you may wish to know that all State-owned corporations agree with Treasury on their budget at the beginning of a financial year and from this budget, Treasury proceeds to develop a Letter of Expectation for each of the organisation.

“These letters of expectation are then signed between the entity and Treasury and these specify the revenue and expenditure figures for the year.”
