NGO intensifies support for learners in Lilongwe

Organisation for Sustainable and Socio-Economic Development Initiative in partnership with Child Fund Korea says it will continue to provide learning materials and infrastructure for learners in Lilongwe.

The non-governmental organisation’s board member Bernard Kamphandule said this on Friday at Kabuthu Primary School in Lilongwe during the commemoration of the Day of the African Child.

“We are supporting schools in Traditional Authority Kabudula as we donate desks, writing materials and construct school blocks to ensure that children learn in a safe environment,” he said.

Kamphandule noted that the Day of the African Child not only commemorates the historic Soweto Uprising of 1976 but also presents an opportunity to reflect on the progress and challenges in promoting children’s rights and access to education.

He further urged collaboration among development partners, traditional leaders and parents to ensure that no child is left behind in accessing quality education.

Lilongwe District Council chairperson Mathias Chiopsanjati echoed the sentiment, highlighting that the day is a reminder of both achievements and persistent gaps in fulfilling children’s rights.

“The celebration serves as a mirror for our collective progress and the work that still lies ahead in integrating children’s needs into our national development strategies,” he said.

Standard Seven learner Yankho Chimlaza from Kabuthu Primary School stressed the importance of children having a platform to express the challenges they face.

He asked government to intensify efforts in addressing issues such as inadequate learning facilities and shortage of teachers.
